Prabal Gurung - Purple Daze

Prabal Gurung launched his first collection in 2009 during New York Fashion Week. He was born in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal. Prabal began his designer career in New Delhi, India where he studied at National Institute of Fashion and Technology. After seven years of travelling he settled in New York. He began his career in Big Apple as an intern for Donna Karran while attending Parsons School of Design. He worked with Cynthia Rowley's design team and  Bill Blass Limited (as the design director) before launching his own collection - PRABAL GURUNG.

INSPIRATIONS

Main inspiration of Prabal Gurung's S/S 2012 collection was photography by Nobuyoshi Araki - Japanese photographer and contemporary artist. Prabal, inspired by Araki's 'Sensual Flowers' series, collaborated with a printmaker in London to create a flower motif which appears on everything from a silk georgette dress to a fitted wool pantsuit. He breaks the femininity of his designs with accessories. Using black leather and silk cord harness he relates to Araki's erotic photographs of women bound in rope.
